Hate Speech and Appropriate Consequences

By now the hateful comments of Doug Lambert at the end of his radio show on Saturday November 14, 2009 are widely known. We join those who have condemned the tone and content of Mr. Lambert's comments. Responsible political discourse is difficult enough without invective and personal attacks. Mr. Lambert's comments have harmed the causes he sought to defend: conservatism and the Judeo-Christian ethic. His second apology reflects the contrition that should be expected of a Christian for a flagrant violation of the command of Scripture:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and
compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:29-32 (NIV).

Unfortunately, a string of liberals have called for government controls on speech that are patently unconstitutional, including Congressman Hodes who should know better. Additionally, even Republican criticism has gone beyond appropriate condemnation of intemperate speech, as in Fergus Cullen's drive-by attack on the audience of "Meet the New Press" or anyone who has viewed the commentary on the website GraniteGrok.

If balance is to return to political discourse, accountability will have to be respectful of free speech, and will have to apply to all participants in the public discourse. Doug Lambert has stepped down from blogging at the 'Grok. The radio show and his columns have been cancelled.

We are left asking where is the overdue apology and resignation of Ray Buckley for his past hate speech and boorish behavior?

"Dithering" on Afghanistan

The deterioration in the Afghanistan situation, coupled with recent upticks in violence in Iraq, point to the growing charge that Obama is dithering on critical military decisions. During the campaign, Obama characterized Afghanistan as the conflict we must win. The time grows short for him to show that he means it while victory is still achievable.

NH Parental and Religious Rights Under Attack

A New Hampshire family is under court order forcing them to place their home schooled daughter in goverment schools. The reason? Poor scores? No. Anti-social behavior? No.

The court appointed guardian ad litem thinks the girl gives a "too strenuous defense of her faith." According to court documents, the guardian ad litem earlier had told the mother, "If I want her in public school, she'll be in public school."

Post Partisan Era? NOT!

The Wall Street Journal reports today that the post-partisan promise of the Obama Administration has fizzled. Now Dems are saying they'll "go it alone" for health care reform.

Not only that, but the skirmish over "Death Panels" is taking a new twist with this coverage of Obama stating that "we're partners with God in matters of life and death." Unbelievable.

Seems we need to be reminded of the lesson of the anagram:

Tell your elected officials that we don't need big government ideas. We just need tried and true freedom and choice to provide quality service at an affordable cost. It's proven, it works, and it's the American Way!

This whole potential Privacy Act violation by the White House this week may be an indicator of something deeper than just a desire to ramrod through socialized healthcare.

The administration encouraged people to email anything "fishy" about the healthcare debate to the email flag@whitehouse.gov for follow-up. Is this as they say to "correct disinformation"? Seems to us that the correct (and alarming) information is all too available.

The Governor Has Spoken

While the saga will now enter a new phase, the Governor released a press statement today on marriage in New Hampshire. The upshot is that he promised to sign a same-sex marriage bill if it had modest changes to the current bill that has been passed by the General Court. Unfortunately, in promising to sign the resulting bill, he is breaking his promise to protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Folks, you can't make this stuff up.

The good folks at GraniteGrok are reporting a harrowing tale of DNC blackmail to pass same-sex marriage in New Hampshire, complete with promises of buckets of money to defend their seats if they pass it, and the loss of the NH primary if they don't!

Additionally, Senate President Sylvia Larsen has accused marriage supporters of being like the KKK in failing to adapt to changing values as racists failed to adapt to emerging racial tolerance in the past. The political climate just keeps on getting nastier -- even if you're just defending common sense.

Call Governor Lynch at (603) 271-2121 and ask him to keep his promise to protect traditional marriage.

Call Senate President Larsen at (603) 271-2111 and ask her to apologize for unnecessarily polarizing the political climate in New Hampshire.

The Wall Street Journal had a report here describing Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA, ACU 0) praising Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis for withholding information from shareholders as he merged the company with troubled Merrill Lynch. Shareholders fired Ken Lewis this week for running the company into the ground. But Frank praised Lewis, saying, "People say 'What's the matter with these financial executives? Why are they only thinking of their own narrow interest? What about the public interest?'" Frank said. "That's what Ken did. It ought to be acknowledged."

So there you have it. Running a US company for a profit is bad when there are losers to bail out with shareholder money. Frank says it is commendable and "public minded" to violate the fiduciary duty to shareholders. That my friends, is the death of capitalism.

The Specter of Blather

With the recent defection of Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA, ACU 42) to the Democrats, there is all this blather going on about how right-wing the Republicans are. Oh, and the Democrats are broad minded? Let's have a little look, shall we?

The American Conservative Union (ACU) rates Congress annually. The scores for this analysis are found here. By the way, you can find Americans for Democratic Action liberal scoring here.

The MSM is saying that Democrats are so inclusive, and Olympia Snowe (R-ME, ACU 12) had a NYT Op-Ed decrying the supposedly narrow tent of Republicans. but the ACU scores for 2008 for the Senate show that Democrats have scores ranging from 0 to 32, with a dismal average of 7. The Republicans have a range of 12 (Thanks Olympia!) to 100 (Real thanks Jim DeMint!) with an average of 72.

On the other hand, the Democratic caucus is statist, not just liberal. Only 12 Democratic Senators have a more conservative score than Bernie Sanders (I-VT, ACU 8) a self-avowed socialist!

I am not an advocate for a tent that is so big you lose what you stand for. And that has been a problem in recent elections for Republicans. But if diversity and tolerance are the measure, then Republicans have the goods. Democrats should be held accountable to walk the walk. They have violated their own prime directive: they are arrogantly, blatantly, shamelessly hypocritical.

Miss USA contestant Carrie Prejean, the odds-on favorite to win the Miss USA pageant, claims her pro-traditional marriage stand cost her the crown. An openly homosexual judge declared "I would have gone up on stage... and snatched the tiara off her head..." had she won.

Expect more of the same "tolerance" from the left as the agenda rolls on. This was never about rights. It is about required acceptance by force of law. Under the guise of tolerance, the most brutal intolerance will be coerced.

Bradley Defends Marriage, Crushes Martin

Jeb Bradley emerged victorious for the special election in state senate district 3. The preliminary tally was Bradley 61% and Martin 39%. Prominent in Bradley's campaign was the defense of traditional marriage.

While Denley beat Martin in November with about 51%, he wasn't as well known as Bradley, and we hadn't seen the recent spate of shenanigans from the profligate Democratic legislature.

The Republicans have been quick to dismiss triumphalism, as Chairman Sununu noted that while it was a strong win, it was also a reliable Republican district.

The wires are hopping with reports that this DHS report was released amid concerns it was biased and unfair. In spite of that fact, Secretary Napolitano released the report last week to law enforcement. It defines a long list of risky citizens that may turn to terrorism in the current economic climate, including (you can't make this stuff up) returning Iraq War Veterans, violent Christian Identity organizations (?!), and people who are overly concerned about "single issues" such as abortion and immigration, and of course, people who buy guns.

That's it folks. If you're a veteran, a Christian, think the nation should have a border, or think you actually have 2nd amendment rights, you're a threat to society and should be watched by law enforcement. Perhaps you're even an enemy of the state!

Now that's change we can believe in! (What's that knock at the door?)

There will be no post-partisan period in this election if we have a repeat of the Washington governor scenario or the Louisiana senator scenario from past elections. This is shaping up to be the most bitter and hostile political environment imaginable.

Our state of New Hampshire has the honor of having a new Navy submarine named after it. Apparently, Governor John Lynch (D-NH), Representative Paul Hodes (D-NH), and Representative Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) were invited to the keel laying ceremony of the new Virginia Class Attack Submarine the USS New Hampshire, but failed to respond.

Though Senators Gregg and Sununu did not attend, they have been involved in the sub's progress, as shown by a press release requesting that the New Hampshire be commissioned in a ceremony at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Fall of 2008.

The Statistician hopes that the Democratic leadership of this state pays as much attention to the critical assets that support and protect our troops as they do in paying lip service to supporting our troops.

Huckabee in New Hampshire

When you consider the stronger showing of governors (executive experience) in presidential contests, and Huckabee's values, no one should be surprised at the staying power of this campaign.

Post-Family New Hampshire

With the passage of HB437, the Civil Unions bill, New Hampshire has become the first state to voluntarily begin a redefinition of the family.

Other pending bills would repeal parental notification and permit any two adults identifying themselves as in a "familial relationship" to adopt children. By striking at the definition of marriage, parenthood and adoption, New Hampshire has defined the "post-family" culture the next generation will become familiar with.

Who knows exactly what the effects will be, but the preponderance of sociological data indicates the results will be destabilizing.

Marriage needs help!

The NH Senate will soon debate the civil unions bill, HB437. It seems the opposing sides are fighting over the institution of marriage as if it were a shining prize, unblemished and ready to be presented to the victor in this political contest of wills.

A better analogy for this contest is a picture of competing “greater goods” for society. In the struggle between labor and management, government routinely hands out incentives or regulations to one side or another. Labor gets easier terms for collective bargaining. Then management gets tax incentives to remain competitive. The underlying sense is that healthy businesses are a greater good that require the containment of both management and labor interests. The remedy balances power between groups of fallible people that too often fail in “seeking the greater good” on their own.

How then should we approach the current debate on marriage? Before we tear marriage apart in the struggle for the prize, let us assess the patient. The Netherlands approved same-sex marriage in 2001. By 2004, Dutch researchers were writing reports like this:

People seem to attach less and less importance to marriage. More people are having children out of wedlock, even though marriage is the best setting for successfully raising a child. There is a broad base of social and legal research that shows marriage to be the best structure for the successful raising of children. A child of out-of-wedlock parents has a greater chance of experiencing problems in his or her psychological development, health, school performance, and even the quality of future relationships.

Supporters of civil unions have pointed out what a mess heterosexual marriage has become. It is all too true that marriage is on the ropes today because of the fallible nature of its heterosexual participants. Marriage is a weak and injured institution, especially in the United States after the widespread adoption of no-fault divorce in the 1970's.

We should not further devalue this institution until it is incapable of delivering the societal benefits it once did. We should emulate other states that are strengthening marriage between one woman and one man. Marriage deserves our support. The civil unions bill should be defeated.

Civil Unions

Yesterday, Civil Unions passed the NH House by a 2 to 1 margin. Lest anyone think liberals will be satisfied with anything less than full gay marriage, read this quote from a leading gay advocacy group:

"GLAD is committed to full marriage equality as the final goal."

This statement makes it clear that even if New Hampshire acquiesces to Civil Unions, the battle is not over. This radical movement will keep coming back for more.

Hodes backtracks on promises

The Concord Monitor ran an editorial regarding the shameful backtracking on campaign promises by Rep. Paul Hodes (D-NH) regarding earmarks and pork. Worse, this came in the form of $20Billion in attached pork to a bill intended to fund our troops in Iraq.

Small people in big jobs up there

The NH House passed a bill making the loss of a balloon equivalent to littering and subject to a $250 fine for first offense. Though lost balloons are a danger to wildlife, isn't littering already on the books, and a sufficient offense to cover the problem? Already the editorial pages are abuzz with the snickers of onlookers across the nation. The title of this post came from a letter to the editor, allegedly because a group of students suggested the bill to a legislator.

This legislature is ignoring major problems in school funding, pension shortfalls, and health costs. And it is making problems worse with social engineering in parental rights, adoption, family life, abortion and marriage. It would be a joke if it wasn't so serious. We would be better off if this was the Do-Nothing House instead of the do petty and wrong things House.

Dodd Dodges Tax Record

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT, ACU 8, ADA 95) is running for President. Recently, he declared that he was a fiscal conservative on WMUR Channel 9 in Manchester. This is a blatant, shall we say, prevarication. His rating from Citizens Against Government Waste in 2005 is 17%, or HOSTILE to taxpayers. Dodd is a liberals' liberal. Just look for the limousine.

Push Button Union Bill (HR 800)

It isn't really surprising, but both Rep. Hodes and Rep. Shea-Porter of New Hampshire have co-sponsored H.R. 800, which would eliminate the right of workers to have a secret ballot for union votes at employers. This bill will make it easier for union bosses to intimidate workers into signing cards which will unionize new shops without the chance of a secret ballot. This will cut their pay for union dues and accelerate the deportation of jobs from the United States.

An education from the Education Committee

Apparently, opponents of SB18, the mandatory schooling until age 18 bill, were very shabbily treated at today's State House hearing. The Chair, Sen. Iris Estabrook (D-Durham) interrupted testimonies, gave preferential time to supporters, and generally besmirched the reputation of this important committee.

It isn't clear why the leadership is so enamored with this bill. It will simply turn NH classrooms into jails for some uninterested students, to the profound detriment of every student in the class.

Supposedly, this is the answer to the school dropout rate. Just define it out of existence and the problem goes away. This doesn't bode well for the education funding debate.

Governor abandons teen girls

Our disingenuous governor is showing his true concern for parental rights and the plight of teen girls in our state. Through a spokesperson, he announced his opposition to any parental notification law by supporting repeal rather than repair of the current law. This isn't about the "health and safety of all women," or he would be seeking to fix rather than repeal this common sense provision.

New legislation proposed by Representative DeGette (D-CO, ACU 4, ADA 90) would fund federal research of Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Write your Congressman to oppose the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research as embodied in HR 3 the DeGette bill.

Whether you oppose federal funding for libertarian or ethical reasons, there are plenty of private sources for research funds, and plenty of sources for stem cells other than human embryos.

Jim "Wire Tap" McDermott (D-WA)

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA, ACU 2, ADA 89) was cited for unethical behavior by the House Ethics Committee today. We've been waiting a long time since this incident for Ethics Committee action, and though today's action is insufficient, at least it warranted news coverage of "Wire Tap Jim's" dirty deeds. This isn't Rep. McDermott's first brush with ethics.

Dems persist in castigating military recruits

Before the November 7 midterm elections, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA, ACU 5, ADA 92) implied that recruits to US Armed Services were unintelligent , and troops responded appropriately. Later, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY, ACU 4, ADA 91) advocated reinstating the draft. The reason for this proposal is to counter the alleged injustice due to only the poor responding to recruiter pitches. This is not the first time Rangel has done this.

The Heritage Foundation has a great article combatting this foolishness with facts. Our service members are dedicated, intelligent, and talented. Thank God the services are filled with people who are serving out of devotion, not because it is thought to be the last refuge of the unemployable and uneducated.
